Nursery Construction & Technology
Nursery Construction
Trees4Good assists its clients with building custom designed nursery complexes, incorporating our bespoke hydroponic technology for the cultivation of a wide variety of crops.
All of our Polytunnels use large diameter, high tensile steel tube manufactured by Europe’s steel manufacturers. All the steel we use is galvanised inside and out for maximum corrosion protection and to the Z35 specification. This means that it has a much higher bending resistance than standard mild steel tube and is therefore stronger in use. The swage joint system is used on all our Polytunnel designs. This allows the tubes to be sleeved together giving a low cost and an extremely strong joint, which means the structures are fast to build and have a very strong anchorage in the ground. Close hoop spacing also increases the strength and reduces unsightly polythene or plastic ‘sag’ and consequently loss of headroom. Trees4Good offers a range of covering to suit any environmental condition and to adjust the light levels required.
Our nurseries incorporate automated systems capable of managing controlled nutrient solutions and watering an entire nursery in less than 15 minutes at the touch of a button. We also offer fully computerised data logging facilities to assist any research and management solution programs.
Trees4Good Plant Media
Trees4Good offer two main types of Peat or Cocoa media:
The Jiffy-7 forestry pellet, made from sphagnum peat from specially selected bogs features a standard pH range from 4.5 to 5.0 and contains no fertilisers. All necessary fertilisers must be added at the nursery. The pellet comes in a thin environmentally friendly and easily breakable, degradable netting allowing for unrestricted root penetration.
The new Jiffy Cocoa Disc, or Jiffy CD, is specially made for the cultivation of plants. The disc concept is to utilise the maximum fibre content in the substrate to obtain the maximum structure stability and optimal air/water ratio. The handling volume is reduced to provide easy handling of the material and lower transportation costs.
A hydrated Jiffy CD will contain about 75% water and 25% air. As coco substrates can vary widely in quality due to the need of proper treatment of the media, Jiffy guarantees the quality of the Jiffy CD to confirm to the needs of the horticultural industry and ensures that the packaging is a renewable environmentally friendly material.
All of these products are suitable for use in Trees4Good nursery constructions and are ideal for use with the modular tray systems used by our nurseries. These trays fit into the system tables allowing for easy watering and maintenance with no need to physically disturb the seedlings.
NFT Gully Systems
NFT (nutrient film technique) is a simple continuous nutrient flow system which typically uses one tenth of the water, a fraction of the minerals and takes up to one tenth the space consumed in traditional agricultural systems. When managed correctly this system, developed in the UK will outperform most other system types currently available.
This product is manufactured from non-toxic ‘rigid’ PVC and is UV stabilised and white in colour. It consists of 2 items; the lid and the trough, and comes in 3 sizes: 4”, 6” and 9”, which accommodate all facets of growing in hydroponics. We can supply in 3cm deep by 5.8 metre lengths un-drilled as standard.
All systems can be either joined together allowing for one main nutrient holding tank or multiple tanks for staged crop rotation were nutrient demands change, either method allows the operator the full control.
Gully SG50-4”
SG50’s thin shallow trough is ideally suited for growing smaller plants, such as quick growing herbs, lettuce or for use as a nursery system for larger plants or cuttings before transplanting into larger systems.
Gully SG70-6”
SG70 is a narrower trough than SG225 and is ideally suited to grow large leafy plant varieties, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, various cut flower crops, capsicum and courgettes.
Gully SG225-9”
SG225 is a versatile trough suitable for NFT or large pots and ideal for the production of flowers and animal fodder.

Flood and Drain System
Trees4Good offers innovative methods for commercial crop growers and research institutes to improve productivity and efficiency.
Trees4Good’s Hi-Hi flood and drain system is primarily suited for the propagation of palms, shrubs, trees, herbs and flowers. The system enables the isolation and management of different plants simultaneously by incorporating preset controlled pumps to deliver nutrients to modular tables. The controllable flood heights with fast drainage increase the amount of oxygen pulled through the media. This results in enhanced respiration by the plants roots.
Additional advantages of the system design include a rain water catchment system to alleviate strain on local supplies and to ensure all water is free from contamination The inert nutrient plant media has a retention time in excess of 24h enabling plant survival due to power failures. Water temperature controls in tropical regions allow for increased levels of dissolved oxygen and reduced evaporation of nutrient solutions and in turn less water consumption.
This system incorporates a range of optional data logging systems to achieve consistent plant growth and yield. All computerised management controls systems options have additional data logging capabilities. Data is stored and transferred via standard USB connection to PC.

The Deep Water Culture System
This product enriches the water with oxygen by applying pressure to the air and water. Allowing a consistently higher level of dissolved oxygen that surpasses the saturation point of water and is maintained under the plant’s Biological Oxygen Demand. This cannot be achieved in any other hydroponic system on the market today in the world.
Each system can be made to the client’s specification. The systems must be installed on a level plinth and be operated by experienced nursery operators.
For utmost performance a water chiller should be installed to allow the optimum nutrient and maximum dissolved oxygen take up in the feed solution. The nutrient temperature should not excess 26c or drop below 16c. Nutrient solution should ideally be maintained between 20c to 22c.
Additional benefits of the system include: rapid root growth through optimal oxygen supply, stockier, higher yielding plants, minimal ph/ec fluctuation, 90% reduced risk of pythium, system operation under 100W.
This system is available in several sizes and systems can be made to measure.
