Trees4Good - protecting the environment for future generations

November 2007

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has challenged governments to act on the findings of a major new report on climate change. The findings are real, and affect us all.

Launching the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, he said real and affordable ways to deal with the problem existed. Planting trees is one of the simplest and most effective ways of helping reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

The IPCC states that climate change is "unequivocal" and may bring "abrupt and irreversible" impacts. Among the top-line conclusions are that climate change is "unequivocal", that humankind's emissions of greenhouse gases are more than 90% likely to be the main cause, and that impacts can be reduced at reasonable cost. There is no doubt that CO2 emissions are a massive contributor to global warming, which is directly increasing species extinction. One of our major projects is in Borneo, where we are actively helping to preserve the orang-utan.

One declaration that reportedly caused heated discussion during the week-long talks here states that climate change may bring "abrupt and irreversible" impacts.

Such impacts could include the fast melting of glaciers and species extinctions.

"Approximately 20-30% of species assessed so far are likely to be at increased risk of extinction if increases in global average temperature exceed 1.5-2.5C (relative to the 1980-1999 average)," the summary concludes.

Other potential impacts highlighted in the text include:

  • between 75m and 250m people are projected to have scarcer fresh water supplies than at present

  • yields from rain-fed agriculture could be halved

  • food security is likely to be further compromised in Africa

  • there will be widespread impacts on coral reefs

In short the global environment is facing catastrophic damage and we have to act now. Businesses and individuals have to work together to make this situation better. Individuals can plant trees as gifts or to offset their own carbon footprint.

For businesses wishing to become carbon neutral, our Corporate Clients have planted large numbers of trees to offset their entire business. To become a corporate client simply contact us and we will go through everything in detail, such as how Trees4Good can become part of your Corporate Social Responsibility programme and how many trees you need to plant to become carbon neutral.

Trees4Good has a unique proposition

The Trees4Good project is unique in its aims and scope. Working directly with local business leaders we have secured large tracts of land on which to grow Jatropha. Jatropha plants "eat" carbon dioxide and give out oxygen, which offsets carbon emissions and helps the environment.

How can you help the environment? Simple -- If you contact us we can tell you the exact costs of planting Jatropha to offset the carbon footprint of your house, business premises, car etc. It is a simple and very effective way of helping the environment.

In fact so good are the prospects for these trees that in January 2008 German carmaker Daimler AG has teamed up with Archer Daniels Midland and Bayer CropScience to explore tropical plant Jatropha as a biodiesel fuel.

"Biodiesel derived from Jatropha nut kernels has properties similar to those of biofuels obtained from oilseed rapes. It is also characterised by a positive CO2 balance and can thus contribute to protecting the climate," the companies have said in a statement.
